Every year in the United States 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. That means in 2007 more than 240,510 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 40,460 women will die from the disease. 20,180 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 15,310 women will die from it. Statistics like these have prompted the Miss Universe Organization and MISS USA to join forces with nationally recognized breast and ovarian cancer organizations to fight the spread of these cancers, the two most common forms of cancer in American women today. Since 1998, when the Miss Universe Organization made the decision to support cancer survivors, fight for legislation and fundraise, each MISS USA has spent thousands of hours educating the public about breast and ovarian cancer. Due to her participation in events like breast cancer walks, seminars and telethons, each MISS USA has helped raise millions of dollars for research. Like her predecessors, she will spend countless hours working in every capacity - from speaking to research and medical experts to offering comfort and support to women with cancer to answering phones and logging miles in walkathons to hosting benefits - with groups like the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Gilda's Club. She will spend her time reaching out to the public, encouraging them to write to their congressmen and women to pass legislation affecting breast and ovarian cancer research. One such piece of legislation, the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act, a stalled bill in Congress, could potentially create eight research centers to study any connection between breast cancer and the environment, thus potentially leading to a cause of breast cancer and hopefully a cure. And, she will work with organizations like Habitat for Humanity, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and the USO. For more information on some of our alliances, read on. And, to join the effort to pass the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act, we encourage you to click below to send a letter to your congressmen and women.
