Contestant Eligibility Change for Miss Universe and Miss USA Contestants

Below is a recap of the email that was distributed on August 5, 2022:

Hello Miss USA State Directors…

Please see the letter below from our Miss Universe CEO, Amy Emmerich:

Hello National Directors –

I hope this finds you all well and thriving.

As you know, the Miss Universe Organization has always strived to evolve with the changing times to best represent and support women globally. Since I arrived at the organization in January 2022, I have been evaluating our processes, procedures, and rules regarding eligibility, to ensure they represented the brand’s values. Paula, President of the Organization, has been with me on this journey. As part of the next step in our evolution, we have implemented the following changes:

Effective with the 72nd Miss Universe competition and national preliminary competitions leading up to it, women who are or have been married, as well as women who are pregnant or have children, will be able to compete.

Earlier this year, we conducted surveys with our audience and you, our directors. The feedback was overwhelming that we all believe women should have agency over their lives, and that a human’s personal decisions should not be a barrier to their success. Recent data also shows that the average age of marriage for women and first-time pregnancy, globally begins at 21. Despite the difference in our cultures and beliefs, this allows all women to put their fate in their own hands and we will accommodate whoever is Miss Universe accordingly. We look forward to continuing welcoming even more aspirational women to our community as a result of these latest changes.

We wanted to share this with you now, as you begin preparations for your local pageants for 2023…

Best – Amy Emmerich, CEO Miss Universe Organization

==================================================================

This is a new rule that has been in the works for quite some time.

So, what this means for the Miss USA Organization and your State Pageants is: beginning with your 2023 State Pageants that lead up to Miss USA 2023, women who are or have been married, as well as women who are pregnant or have children, are eligible to compete.

This rule change does not apply to our Miss Teen USA program.

We just wanted to make you all aware of this change since it was just announced this afternoon.
